DENISE GALLAGHER + 64 PARISHES

November 15, 2022
Illustrator Denise Gallagher:  In 2019 the Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana held an exhibit of Denise's artwork which featured picture book illustrations, book spreads and actual pencil sketches. During the exhibit, the museum was visited by the editor of “64 Parishes Magazine,” a publication of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. He was fascinated by her work and reached out to Denise to create a cover illustration for the magazine’s Winter edition. She was excited by the opportunity and created an image of “Notre Dame d’Hiver,” an imaginary Southern queen, riding a brown bear and surrounded by the flora and fauna that flourish in the green Louisiana winters.

“I gasped when I opened the file!" wrote the magazine’s art director. The cover was indeed beautiful and was proudly distributed in museums, galleries and businesses throughout Louisiana.
