ðŸŽ¨ Illustrating Resilience: Texas Medicine Magazine Cover by Denise Gallagher

Editorial illustration presents an exciting challenge - one that goes beyond simply creating an interesting or aesthetically pleasing image. Each piece must quickly and effectively convey a concept, requiring both strong design thinking and illustration skills.

When the art director of Texas Medicine Magazine reached out to Those 3 Reps in search of an illustrator, Denise Gallagher eagerly took on the opportunity. The magazine, a publication of the Texas Medical Association, had recently undergone updates and was seeking illustrated covers to engage both new and longtime readers.

The theme of the first issue was “Overcoming Obstacles,” and Denise set to work brainstorming concepts that would tell a compelling story while maintaining a modern and dynamic illustration style. She also wanted to incorporate a subtle nod to Texas culture.

Her creative solution involved using cacti as the symbolic “obstacle,” presenting three variations on the theme. The art director was drawn to one particular sketch—a powerful image of a physician lifting a patient over the cacti.

“I enjoyed playing with color, joyfully splashing the cacti with a variety of hues, and I was proud of the resulting illustration,” Denise shared.

The final piece was met with enthusiasm, and both Denise and the art director are looking forward to collaborating again on the next cover in the Texas Medicine Magazine series.

When TRG Agency tapped Amy Mikler to shoot the Swensons campaign in Ohio, the ask was pretty specific. Make it feel real, but make it work. That's a harder brief than it sounds, because most photographers can do one or the other. Amy did both. The images came back warm and genuinely lived-in, the kind where you can't quite tell where the direction ended and the moment began, which is exactly the point. If you're building a campaign around real people doing real things and you need the images to actually land, that's Amy's territory.
